BYU is my life!

Getting up to Speed. (Football gets first commit of 2008)
By Mitch Section: Quick Links
Posted on Wed Feb 14, 2007 at 03:52:54 PM EST

The workload has been alot busier lately, and I haven't had much internet time.  So my apologies for the lack of posting.  Here is what has been going on in the world of Cougar sports in the past week, for those of that missed it.

The Class of 2008 recruiting is off to a big start with the commitment of Austin Holt the highly touted TE out of Bingham High School.  Holt just this past summer was listed in The Sporting News High School Football preview as a Top 25 prospect for the Class of 2008, so this is a big get.  Imagine a TE tandem of Devin Mahina and Austin Holt?  BYU is gonna be loaded as always at TE for years to come.

BYU Basketball is on a tear, winning their last Six games, and owns sole possesion of 1st place in the conference.  There are five games left three of which are at the Marriott Center, and then the two road games are tough but BYU should win at San Diego State and Air Force.  Should be very exciting down the stretch.

BYU is currently tied for the nation's longest home winning streak in the nation at 28 games with Air Force.  Gonzaga lost Monday night at home in "The Kennel" to Santa Clara, 84-73.  BYU's streak will be put to the test tonight against New Mexico.

BYU received another walk-on commitment from Cole Nielsen a Quarterback who was a Top 100 prospect back in 2003.

As for the site, still going to post the Recruiting class reviews for each season and cover more in-depth the tail end of Basketball season leading up to "March Madness!"

Go Cougars!

Does anybody know were playing Utah tomorrow?
By Mitch Section: Basketball
Posted on Tue Jan 30, 2007 at 11:34:13 AM EST

College Basketball in the state of Utah is a complete afterthought anymore.  You wouldn't realize that tomorrow is the big game against Utah at the Huntsman Center to finally avenge all the losses that we have suffered there in the past decade or so.

It's amazing how big of a gap there is between football and basketball, in terms of interest and it puzzles me as to why that has happened.  A week or so ago, I was watching BYUTV Classic BYU sports, and I saw the '94 BYU vs. Utah game at the Marriott Center with Barry Tompkins and Marques Johnson doing the call.  It was a great game to watch, and what I found really interesting was the intensity, the capacity crowd, and how loud the MC was.  Last season when BYU hosted Utah there was only 13,000+.  Not too impressive especially when you consider about a thousand or two were Utah fans.

Unlike the majority of people, I'm really excited about this game, and I feel BYU is finally gonna get that elusive win in the Huntsman Center.  I hate having to hear Greg Wrubell after losses to Utah at the JMHC when we are finally gonna break through, and its time to end that and give the Cougar Nation some more excitement.  On paper, BYU should dominate but Utah has had BYU's number in recent years and BYU always tends to play one of their worst games of the year against the clowns from up north.

Also, thanks to "Hair" Thompson the game will be on the beloved mtn.  So if you don't have access to the mtn. and you live in the area get to the Huntsman Center and cheer on the Cougs.

Time:  8:00 p.m.
TV: mtn.
Location:  Jon M. Huntsman Center

Basketball Roundup: Two big wins in conference
By Mitch Section: Basketball
Posted on Sun Jan 28, 2007 at 08:29:49 PM EST

Sorry for the lack of posting, but here is a recap of the week that was in the world of Cougar Hoops.

It was an eventful week for Cougar hoops this past week, with some big victories that could turn around the team to make a late push at the "Big Dance."

Wednesday

The Cougars finally got their first road victory outside of the Beehive State last Wednesday with a win in "The Pit" of Albuquerque.  Jonathan Tavernari ignited the big win with 18 points coming off the bench.  Tavernari is really becoming a very good player, he has a nice shot and has a knack for making plays.  He is going to be very good as he continues to develop.  BYU was up by nine at the Half and never looked back.  The Lobos "star" player J.R. Giddeons received a few boos from the Lobo crowd, but in the 2nd half he injured his ankle and did not return.  The future for Lobos head coach Ritchie McKay looks very dim right now with his team struggling mightily and he is losing the fan support quickly.  This was a big boost for the confidence of BYU though, a win on the road in the Mountain West is no easy chore.  This could be a win that springboards BYU to big things down the stretch and play the way they were expected to in the pre-season.

Saturday

It was the first sell-out the Marriott Center has seen since the Big Monday 10 p.m. matchup against Utah back on March 1st, 2004.  It was "White Out" and $1 ticket day as well so the Marriott Center was pumped to host the ranked Cadets.  BYU came out of the gates down 10-4 but pulled together a 8-0 run and the Cougs sustained a lead for the rest of the game.  Air Force would make many runs but the Cougars had the ever famous "Marriott Center Magic" on their side in Provo yesterday.
Trent Plaisted put in 22 points including two late Free Throws that sealed the win giving the Cougars a five-point lead.  This was Air Force's 2nd loss in the conference (Utah).  There is now three teams with at the top with two conference losses (AFA, UNLV, and BYU).  This win set BYU up for a shot at the conference title, it is in their corner to take advantage and get it done.  This was BYU's first win over a ranked opponnet since Oklahoma State back in 2003 at the formerly known Delta Center.  The Cowboys were ranked #25 and eventually went to a Final Four that season.

Up Next
It's another big week for the Cougar Cagers coming up.  The Cougs travel to the Huntsman Center to face arch-rival Utah.  BYU hasn't won at the JMHC since the '93-'94 on a Robbie Reid three point shot.  Let's just say its long overdue that BYU gets another win in that place.
Then on Saturday the 2nd round of games against MWC foes begins with a matchup at home against UNLV who is currently tied with BYU at 2nd place in the MWC.  The Rebs won the first matchup earlier in the month after a 2nd half collapse by the Cougars, should be a different story in Provo.

I personally think that North Carolina is the #1 team in the nation, followed by Wisconsin then UCLA then Florida at #4. Another team that I'm very high on but has been struggling as of late is the Arizona Wildcats. The 'Cats have lost three straight Pac-10 Conference games for the first time since the Ronald Reagan administration. The Pac-10 is very good this year, but don't be surprised if come March the Wildcats are making a deep run in the tournament.

BYU will be facing the #13 team this Saturday on this poll, Air Force in the Marriott Center at 4 p.m. Should be a very exciting game.

Recruiting Class Evaluations: 1998
By Mitch Section: Recruiting
Posted on Sun Jan 21, 2007 at 05:17:38 PM EST

Here is the third installment leading up to Letter of Intent Day, evaluating BYU recruiting classes.

Spencer Abney TE Orem
Never enrolled

Eugene Childs WR Los Angeles
Didn't make it academically

Logan Deans RB Englewood, CO
Went on mission, came back in '01 and redshirted. Played in 12 games in 2002 gained 17 yards. After '02 season quit the team.  Deans was known as the team comedian during his one season.

Kevin Gilbride QB Jacksonville, FL
Redshirted in '98, quit the team during the '99 season.  He then transferred to Hawaii, and didn't do anything due to Timmy Chang being there and the QB who tore apart BYU, Nick Rolovich.  Gilbride's father who has the same name was a head coach for the San Diego Chargers for a few years.

Jernaro Gilford DB Hawthorne, CA
Gilford wasn't eligible at BYU for the '98 season, he signed again in '99.  Gilford saw very little time in his Freshman season in '99, but there was a lot of excitement about him being a future star at the DB spot.  During the summer of 2000, Gilford was suspended for the year for stealing sports equipment.  Came back in 2001, and had an outstanding year, recording six INT's including the one against Utah that sealed the game.  Gilford earned 1st Team All-MWC honors that year.  The following season, Gilford was hampered by knee problems that would bother him the rest of his career.  Only had three INT's in his Junior and Senior season, still one of the most talented Cornerbacks BYU has had.  Gilford was with the Seahawks but knee problems ended his chances of making the team.
This past year, Gilford was a coach at Pima Community College along with former Cougars Joshua Brandon, and Chris Stevens.
Here is a highlight package from the 2001 Utah game.

Gray was quietly one of BYU's best

Brian Gray DB El Camino JC
Gray was a standout CB for BYU, going down as one of the best in BYU history. Gray had 33 tackles, 1 sack, and 2 INT's in '98. One of his interceptions was the eventual game winning TD against San Diego State (13-0). In '99 had 36 tackles and 3 INT's. Gray's stats could have been better but opposing offenses were afraid to throw around him.

Sione Havili RB Salt Lake
Went on a mission, came back early because he was involved in a arsonist crime. He wanted to transfer to Utah. McBride wanted him to join but the administration (Chris Hill in particular) wouldn't let him. Didn't enroll in either BYU or Utah, later transferred to Texas Tech, but did not play for the Red Raiders either.  Finally, ended up playing for Ron McBride but it was at Weber State.

Isaac Herring OL Mapleton, UT
A good lineman at the Y. Started in last 26 games as a Cougar. He had a 626 lb. squat.

Junior "Reno" Mahe RB Salt Lake
Came into BYU as a RB, and saw time immediately at the position. In his first college game against Alabama, had a TD run. In the '98 season had 98 carries for 510 yards. In '99 kicked out of school for HC violation. In '00 played at Dixie State. In '01 came back to the Y, and was switched to the WR position where he started on the best offense in the country. Started in all 14 games, 1st TM MWC selection. Had 91 rec for 1,211 yards and 180 rushing yards. In '02 his stats weren't as great due to the lack of offense and no consistency at QB but still solid, 59 rec for 771 yards and 86 rushing yards. Married to former BYU volleyball player Sonny Tonga.  Mahe had a great career at BYU.

Brandon McFerren OL Union City, CA
Never saw much time in his 4 years, quit the team after '01 season.

James Morgan OL Dunnellon, FL
Never made it into school.

Moa Peaua LB Reno, NV
Came back from mission in '00 and redshirted. In 2001-2003 had season ending injuries giving him not much playing time at LB and DE. In 2004, saw limited time as a blocking FB.  In 2005, transferred to Weber State for his final season.

Poppinga was awesome on and off the field

Brady Poppinga LB Evanston, WY
Poppinga was a great player at BYU, he was always a vocal leader and he was a very talented player. Saw action in 12 games his Freshman season recording 10 tackles and a Fumble recovery against Hawaii. In '02 switched to DE and was a 1st TM MWC selection, leading the MWC with 8 sacks, also had 49 tackles, 14 for loss, and started in all 12 games. In '03 was a 1st TM MWC Selection again, had 55 tackles, 6 sacks, and 2 INT's. In '04 switched back to his old position at LB, due to the lack of depth and he had 79 tackles and 6 sacks and for the 3rd straight year was 1st TM MWC selection. First BYU player to do that in the MWC era. Poppinga was an outstanding player.  Drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 4th Round of the 2005 NFL Draft, and has become a very good LB for Green Bay alongside A.J. Hawk.

Jonathan Pittman WR Long Beach City College
Redshirted in '98 due to academics. In '99 saw significant time playing in all 12 games gaining 478 yards on 29 receptions, also had 4 TD's. In '00 was 2nd on the team in receiving (behind Hooks) gaining 691 on 38 receptions and hauling in 5 TD's. Pittman's shining moment at BYU was of course the game against Utah, 4th and 23 and Doman goes deep to Pittman and he hauls it in for the huge first down.  Then the following play, Doman is calling one thing but Pittman disagreed giving him a hand signal to go deep.  Doman went with Pittman's call and again down the sideline to haul in another catch, because of those catches BYU beat the Utes in one of the most memorable finishes in the rivalry.  After Pittman's glorious moments in the spotlight, one week later he breaks the Honor Code getting kicked out of school and he didn't graduate.

Dustin Rykert OL Roseville, CA
Rykert was a massive O-lineman, lining up at 6-7.  Played in all but 4 games in his career at the Y. He was a Conference Honorable Mention in 2001-2002.  Rykert even scored a Touchdown in his career during the 2001 Liberty Bowl against Louisville.  It was BYU's only Touchdown that entire game.  Rykert had a short tenure in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.

Heshimu Robertson DB Long Beach, CA
Robertson was a mid-year enrollee, played Spring Football in '98.  Robertson and Brian Gray made a outstanding Cornerback tandem, but there wasn't much depth behind them.  With that said, Robertson was suspended for the Liberty Bowl against Tulane where Rob Warcup was the back-up, and Shaun King never even looked at Brian Gray's side the entire day.  Robertson did come back in '99 and did a nice job, for his size he did a good job.  Robertson recorded 78 tackles in his career.

TJ Sitake RB Salt Lake
Sitake's career just recently ended in the 2005 season.  Sitake was listed as a RB during the '99 and '00 seasons, then went on a mission.  Sitake never returned until the 2004 season, I don't know the exact reasons what took so long but I was surprised to see him back.  Was switched to D-line for the 2005 season, and had 17 tackles.  His brother, Kalani is a assistant coach at Utah.

Chris Stevens LB Hemet, CA
Never saw playing time quit team after '03 season.  This past season, a coach at Pima Community College.

Hanale Vincent OL Kailua, HI
Good career at BYU, he played at all positions on the OL. Started in 7 games in '02 for the injured Scott Jackson. Saw playing time go down in '03-'04 seasons.

Wente should have took notes from this guy

Nathan Wente TE Canby, OR
Didn't see much playing time in his 3 years at BYU, quit team after '02 season.  He was too thin to be a TE at the D-1 level.

Michael Westbrook WR Lakewood, WA
In '98 Saw action in all 12 games as Freshman had 1 reception for 14 yards. In '99 played in 4 games receiving 9 catches for 65 yards, after the USU game quit the team.  Westbrook had a brother that played for the Washington Redskins.

Ranking the Class

  1. Brady Poppinga
  2. Brian Gray
  3. Reno Mahe
  4. Jernaro Gilford
  5. Dustin Rykert

This class had a lot more talent than the '97 class, a major upgrade.  I was really excited about Michael Westbrook and Eugene Childs but that didn't work out.  Poppinga was a stud, I really enjoyed listening to him in interviews during his career.  All of the players I ranked in the Top five of this class had a shot at the NFL or are currently in the league.

Beck throws TD pass in Shrine Game
By Mitch Section: Football
Posted on Sun Jan 21, 2007 at 04:14:47 PM EST

Beck did nothing to hurt his stock at the Shrine game

Former BYU QB John Beck started for the West squad in yesterday's East-West Shrine Game, and on the opening drive threw a nice TD pass to Boise State FB Brad Lau.

The commentators had many good things to say about Beck in the beginning of the broadcast. Bob Davie said he feels that Beck could be a 1st Day Draft pick, and one day become a NFL starting QB. Beck was featured as a "Impact Player" in the game.

The West did get the 21-3 win over the East. The MVP was not given to a QB but not Beck, it was Nevada's Jeff Rowe who earned the honor.

The next important date for people following John Beck's trek to the NFL is the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on February 21st-27th.

Cougars collapse in Second Half again on the road
By Mitch Section: Basketball
Posted on Sun Jan 21, 2007 at 02:18:26 AM EST

Yet again BYU's basketball team came up short in a MWC game away from the Marriott Center.  The Cougars were up by two at Halftime but couldn't stop the Rams at all in the second half not being able to get critical stops when needed.  BYU shot well from the field as well but they couldn't get the stops on D, to get the win.  This is the second straight MWC road game, where BYU collapsed in the second half and trailing by a large deficit.  As I mentioned in the game thread, BYU couldn't have a scoring drought and expect to win, and of course a scoring drought took place in the second half and the Rams took advantage creating a big lead.

The Rams 7-footers, Jason Smith and Stuart Creason had foul troubles early on forcing them to sit most of the 1st half, but the Cougars couldn't break away due to the hot shooting from CSU's guard line.  Stephan Gilling had 16 points, 12 of which came from behind the 3-point arc.  Austin Ainge was non-existent today, with zero points, and had no answer to the Rams guard play.  Trent Plaisted had a great 1st half scoring 14 points, which ties his season best for points in a half (Michigan State).  Plaisted ended up with 27 points but could of had 30+, had he made his free throws.  Plaisted missed eight free throw's and one of those was off the front end, so nine points were lost from Plaisted free throws, he has a great touch just needs to get consistent and put them in.

Jimmy Balderson who has been a non-factor the past few games played very well today scoring 21 points.  If Balderson can continue this kind of play on the road, BYU is going to pull out some victories, he is an "X-factor" when he plays well BYU usually pulls out a win.

Aside from the loss, I feel this team made progress today on playing better on the road.  Colorado State is a very good team this season.  Don't be surprised if the Rams win the conference this season, I came away very impressed with the boys from Fort Collins.

BYU is now 13-6, 3-2 in Mountain West play, with a trip to Albuquerque up next on Wednesday.  The Lobos are currently dead last in the conference standings, so this would be a good opportunity for the road drought to end.

BYU (13-5, 3-1) @ Colorado State (13-4, 3-2)
By Mitch Section: Basketball
Posted on Sat Jan 20, 2007 at 03:27:39 PM EST

Can BYU get their first win on the road out of the state of Utah?

Time: 3:30 p.m.
Place:  Moby Arena
TV:  mtn.
Radio:  KSL 1160, 102.7

Today is a big game in the conference picture.  BYU who is oustanding at home, has struggled on the road this season only winning one game and that was up in Ogden at Weber State.  A win today in Fort Collins could turn the tide on the season, similar to what happened last year.

CSU Projected Starting Lineup
G 4 Cory Lewis 6-0 175 Sr. 11.3
G 12 Tim Denson 6-1 195 Jr. 8.3
G 33 Stephan Gilling 6-2 190 So. 7.9
F 14 Jason Smith 7-0 230 Jr. 16.6
C 30 Stuart Creason 7-0 260 Jr. 11.1

This will be a daunting task for KT and Plaisted today, facing two true 7-footers.  Jason Smith is the Rams star.  BYU needs to get off to a quick start and not have any scoring draughts.  BYU over the years has been well known for scoring draughts, and for a team that is struggling on the road in conference, draughts will not get it done.  Austin Ainge needs to have a break out performance in controlling the offense and not giving up any out of control turnovers.

I wanna say that BYU is going to win this game, but this team is a completely different personality away from the Marriott Center.  BYU needs to build a lead in the 1st Half and not let up.  I'm expecting a down to the wire game.

A look at 2007 MWC Non-Conference Schedules
By Mitch Section: Football
Posted on Thu Jan 18, 2007 at 01:32:30 PM EST

I've been following the Pac-10 and SEC scheduling debate over at DawgSports, and it inspired me to take a look at the 2007 non-conference slate for teams in the Mountain West.

The Mountain West is a conference that relies heavily on playing well in the non-conference against BCS opponents.  Because being in this league garners no respect from the national media, especially since we are on the beloved Mountain West Sports Network also known as "the mtn."  With that said lets take a look at 2007's slate.

Air Force
9-1 Northern Colorado
9-29 @ Navy
11-3 Army
11-10 @ Notre Dame

The Cadets have the two games against the military schools which is a given every season to battle for the Commander in Chief Trophy.  Navy is good and currently has a four game win streak over the Falcons.  A home game against Northern Colorado is a gimmie game at best, and then a trip to South Bend which is always difficult.  But not too bad of a schedule for new head coach Troy Calhoun.
Grade:  B-

After Sept. 8th....The Cougars will simply Love LA!

BYU
9-1 Arizona
9-8 @ UCLA
9-15 @ Tulsa
10-20 Eastern Washington

Coach Mendenhall has expressed that he wants to find "balance" in scheduling, and I believe he did with the 2007 schedule.  Arizona will be a revenge game at home to open the season with a new QB, Arizona is looking to improve off its six win season.  UCLA returns 20 of its 22 starters from last season that beat USC.  UCLA is a pre-season sleeper for '07 already.  Then the Cougs go to Skelly Stadium for the first time since '96 to face a team who BYU destroyed by 25, they will be gunning for the Cougars.  After those first three contests there is some conference games and then Eastern Washington in the middle of October, which I think is a smart move.  If BYU comes out of the gate 3-0 with that schedule expect big things the rest of the year.
Grade:  B+

Colorado State
9-1 Colorado (@Denver, CO)
9-8 California
TBA
TBA

Colorado State still needs to fill two vaccancies in its schedule.  They have the annual Rocky Mountain Showdown in Invesco to open the year.  Then the Rams bring in a Pre-Season Top 25 team in Cal to Fort Collins.  These are two good programs that if CSU could get wins over would be good attention for the MWC.  The Rams return star RB Kyle Bell next season.  As for the last two games, expect two easy D-1AA opponents, therefore brings down the grade.
Grade:  C+

New Mexico
9-1 @ UTEP
9-8 New Mexico State
9-15 @ Arizona
TBA

The Lobos have a good mix in this schedule with a up and coming BCS program, one of the better mid-majors and an in-state rival.  The Lobos beat the Miners last season Albuquerque.  Expect Rocky Long to get a D-1AA opponnet at home to fill the final vaccancy, like most schools do.

San Diego State
TBA
9-8 @ Washington State - Seattle, WA
9-15 @ Arizona State
TBA

The two games the Aztecs have scheduled are very difficult, but this is nothing new to the Aztecs who have travelled to the "Horsehoe" of all places in recent seasons.  The MWC always wants to beat the Pac-10 foes, but the problem is, its San Diego State.  Have they ever won?  Not since the Faulk days at least.
Grade:  B (for now)

Everything apparently is better in Texas

TCU
9-1 Baylor
9-8 @ Texas
9-22 SMU
10-13 @ Stanford

TCU is going to have a lot of pre-season hype in this league, coming off that Poinsettia Bowl performance so there are big plans in Fort Worth.  The first thing that catches your eye in this schedule is of course Texas.  TCU has went into big-time Big XII environments before and won (Oklahoma in 2005).  All of the Frogs games are in the state of Texas until a trip to Palo Alto to face Jim Harbaugh's Cardinal in October, who only won one game last year but is still a "BCS conference" foe so its still a good game.  A very good schedule.

How did UNLV get Wisconsin to play in Vegas?

UNLV
8-30 @ Utah State
9-8 Wisconsin
9-15 Hawai'i
9-29 @ Nevada

QB Rocky Hinds returns and the season oppener should get his confidence up with a easy game at Utah State.  Then the Rebs host Wisconsin who is a National Title contender next season with P.J. Hill in the backfield.  The Rebs have won against Wisconsin before, in Madison to be exact.  Then another good game against Hawaii who has Colt Brennan coming back.  And finally another WAC opponent in Nevada who has become a solid football program as of late.  Three WAC teams, and a National Title contender at home, pretty good.
Grade:  B+

Utah
9-8 @ Oregon State
9-15 UCLA
9-29 Utah State
10-6 @ Louisville

As all of us BYU fans know, Utah is not known for playing the toughest of schedules in the non-conference.  But the Utes like they always do are taking some notes from Provo on how to schedule.  Oregon State is coming off a Sun Bowl win, and the Beavers also beat USC earlier last season.  UCLA as mentioned is a sleeper team, travels to play the Utes one week after playing BYU.  Then the "Battle of the Brothers" against Utah State which is a must every season for the Ute faithful.  Then a trip to Papa John's Stadium to play Brian Brohm and the Louisville Cardinal who are going to be a pre-season Top 10 team.  So other than Utah State this schedule is very difficult for the Utes.
Grade:  A

Wyoming
9-1 Virginia
9-8 Utah State
9-15 @ Boise State
9-22 @ Ohio

Wyoming has a chance at revenge against Virginia in War Memorial to open the season.  I'm surprised to see a ACC team travelling to Laramie, never thought I would see that.  Then Utah State, and for the second year in a row the Pokes go to Boise.  Wyoming shut down Boise's offense holding them to only 17 points on the smurf turf.  Then a game at Frank Solich's Ohio Bobcats.
Grade:  B-

Hoops get commit from local Point Guard
By Mitch Section: Recruiting

Dave Rose received a commitment for the Spring signing period from Davis High Point Guard Nick Martineau.

Martineau, a two-sport star, has made an oral commitment to play basketball for the Cougars. He'll play for BYU next year before serving an LDS Church mission.

Martineau had scholarship offers from some smaller football schools, but he rejected them for the chance to play Division I basketball for the Cougars. He said the better basketball offer, however, didn't play into his decision-making process and that BYU is the right place for him to go.

Point Guard Situation in 2007
- Ben Murdock, currently the second string PG behind Austin Ainge
- Lamont Morgan (Saddleback JC)
- Nick Martineau
